Our new lifeboat the Ernest and Mabel, came on station in Sept ’02. Beryl Taylor the lady who kindly gave us £1,000,000 towards the cost, dedicated the new boat to her late parents Ernest & Mabel. A station only gets a new lifeboat roughly every 20-25 years. Our previous Arun Class, 54-04 the Tony Vandervell arrived here 26 years ago so Ernest and Mabel might have to serve in our waters until at least 2025 quite a sobering thought. At a total cost of £1,860,000 she is equipped with state-of-the-art electronics, a virtually indestructible hull and a pair of engines that deliver 2,500 hp giving her a top speed of 26 knots. Compare that with the old boat Tony Vandervell, at 900 hp and 18 knots and you begin to see where the money goes!
