How to be environmently friendly

When you go out to the shoreline to see the living things the best time is when the tide is right out. This happens twice a day at different times each day. The tide goes out furthest when there is a full moon or a new moon. To find out when these times are, look at a tide table, ring the coastguards or the tourist information office.

The best place to go is to a rocky beach where most species are anchored to the rocks and seaweed. When you go, there are things you have to consider because it can be a dangerous place. Also there are animals living there so you don't want to disturb them.

How to look after yourself:

  • Check the weather before you go, a lot of wind can bring the tide in very quickly.
  • Seaweed is slippery so watch where you are going.
  • Check if there are any sewage outlets at the beach. If there are, never eat your lunch there, it may be contaminated.
  • Make sure you have checked the tide table before going so you don't get cut off.
  • Never put your hands in or around your mouth after handling creatures, seaweed etc...

How to look after the wildlife:

  • Never take any animals off the beach.
  • Always take litter home with you.
  • Don't pull the seaweed up, it is their home.
  • Don't cause any disturbance, if you don't have to.
  • Always put rocks and seaweed back where they were.
  • Avoid lifting large rocks - you may hurt yourself and the animals living underneath

Leave the beach as you found it for others to enjoy.
