Weymouth Harbour

The local fishing industry supports about 200 people at sea (about the same as the number of local people who volunteered to support Drake and his Armada).

Approximately 40 vessels work the local waters - from one man in an open 19 footer like WH148 - to 4 men on a modern enclosed 50 footer like Portland Isle and Isle of Portland.

Over the years, in these waters man has used his ingenuity to trap fish in a variety of ways including; Set Netting, Surround Netting, Seine Netting in Lerrets, Long-lining and modern day Trawling.

Nowadays - due to its high quality, about 90% of locally trawled fish is sent direct to Brixham Market in Devon and then on to Billingsgate in London.

95% of locally caught shellfish is exported to France and Spain in vivier trucks . Each truck load has an end market value of up to 300% more than the price paid at the quay.
